Giuseppe Maria Crespi. Portret of Antonio Cartolari
Portrait of Antonio Cartolari, Oil on Canvas, 93x75cm, National Art Gallery of Bologna
|
Luigi Crespi (Bologna, 1709-1779)
This painting depicts engraver, designer and decorator Antonio Cartolari (1701-1779), who testifies in his 1777 will that in this portrait everything from the arms to the head is the work of S.r.Knight Crespi, also known as the Spaniard. The painting was subsequently delivered to the Bolognese Sanctuary for Impoverished Priests (Ospizio dei Poveri Sacerdoti Bolognesi) on Nozadella Street (Mazza 2000, pp.71-73). The writing in the will corresponds with the notes of Marcello Oretti: the head is painted by Giuseppe Crespi, also known as the Spaniard, everything else is painted by his son Canon Luigi. Engraved on the plate is: Luigi C.f. It is known that Giuseppe Maria Crespi made corrections to his son`s paintings, which were painted in the family studio, and painted in the most complex details, such as, in the case of this painting the face of his friend Antonio Cartolari. As a creative duo, they were also well-known among the city`s clients for works of art, depending on the circumstances, their works were also ascribed under one name or the other, because son Luigi was also very gifted (Roli 1977,pp 144-148). By the time he was in his thirties, it is conceivable that the talented young artist was already capable of creating a work independently, and that he was responsible for painting the setting for the portrait of Cartolari: the project plans, compass ink and pencil even divert attention from the face, indirectly indicating the ability of a student of Ferndinando Bibiena to depict complicated items. Just as in the portrait of the family of silversmith Zanobio Troni, in this painting Crespi alludes to the occupation of the subject of the portrait. The work`s stylistic traits and biographical clues suggest that it dates back to around (M.Danieli, in Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna 2011, pp.158-160).

The Historical Portrait of the 17th-18th century in Latvia
Exhibition in the History Museum of Latvia
Mathias Szwiczek (1601-1654) was a german painter.
There are some portraits from Gotthard Kettler dinasty. He was the last Master of Livonian Order and the first Duke of Courland and Semigallia (Herzogtum Kurland und Semgallen).

Historically, portrait paintings have primarily memorialized the rich and powerfull. Over time, however, it become more common for middle-class patrons to commission portraits of their families and colleagues.
During the Baroque and Rococo periods (17th and 18th centuries, respectively), portraits became even more important records of status and position.
The period from the last quarter of the 16th century till the middle of the 17th century, when Latvia was touched by tendencies of Nordic Renaissance and the trends of Mannerism spread, in sense of stylistic influences is on of the most interesting periods in the history of Latvian art. In the middle of the 17th century in portraiture there appeared the traits of the Baroque taste. In the Baroque age the significance of secular portrait increased. The main customers were the Dukes, noblemen, clergymen and rich city dwellers of Courland.
In the exhibition I was impressed from the portrait of an unknown man of the von Taube family (1670s), which represents the compositional type, widespread in the Baroque age - "a portrait of a knight". The portrayed nobleman is depicted cased in armour, thus accenting the nobility of the family and its longstanding origin. The portrayal of the nobleman is supplemented with the coat of arms of the family and an inscription, which explains the posts of the portrayed person in the ducal service.

17.th and 18.th centuries - time of Ernst Johan von Biron and Gotthard Kettler. The boom of the Baroque age portraiture in the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia dates to the middle and the second half of the 18th century - the rule of thr Dukes Ernst Johann von Biron, when there worked Leonhardt Schorer, Friedrich Hartman Barisien and Johann Gottlieb Becker, as well as other less known painters.
Ernst Johann von Biron (1690-1772) - was a Duke of Courland and Semigallia (1737) and regent of the Russian Empire (1740).
During 17.th and 18th.centuries there worked painters - Leonhardt Schorer (1715-1777) , Johann Gottlieb Becker (1823-1893) and anothers. The portrait painter L.Schorer born in Konigsberg, favoured by the Courland nobility, who in 1736-1737 has been working in Dresden, in about 1744 settled in Courland. The paintings of L.Schorer fascinate with a realistic, unusually expressive characterisation of the portrayed person, expressive stylisation, which sometimes even become almost grotesque.

Friedrich Hartman Barisien (1724-1796) . The native town of the most outstanding F.H. Barisien is Coburg in Saxony. He mastered his skills in Dresden, for a short time stayed in Russia and in 1770 came to Courland, in order to join the service of the Duke Peter von Biron and become the court artist. When portraiting the Duke Peter and the members of his family, F.H. Barisien like the painters of other European courts, used the schemes of parade clothes charasteristic to Baroque age, repeated the approbated compositions and influenced fom the etched samples ot the works of French artists H.Rigaud, N.de Largilliere, frequently painted replicas of his works.

But my favorite work was art work by L.Stake "Place and time" 90x125, oil/canvas
"Milk and blood are the words that we use for new, heatlhy girl or child, but each word separately has complex semiotic meaning. All the works of exibition seems to be portraits of children and young people, and the composition and expression style is very classical with reference to traditional painting. But at the same time no one is true "portrait" as the don't represent definite person or situation. May be they are just potential portraits of some person's emotional experience or feeling . They are not even children what I've painted. These are metaphors. Innocence, growth, potential, vulnerability, intuition."/Jana Brike/
Next stop - Ritums Ivanovs "Amy.Cate.Gaga".I liked the most - Kate Moss, 2010, a/e 153x200

In this time for me was interesting to see how banks organize such contest in other countries. For example, 2011 RBC Canadian Painting Competition. There is a regionaly jury panel of distinguished memebers from the art community. The national winner receives a purchase prize of $25,000. I had a nice surprise to find there latvian forname between painters - Krisjanis Katkins -Gorsline.

Rudolfs Pinnis - 109
From 14th October to 19th November in Mukusalas makslas salon you can attend an exhibition "Rudolfs Pinnis -109". It is an opportunity to see the works from Mukusalas makslas salons and Rudolf Pinnis family's collection. Exposition offers opportunity to trace how the artist has approached the traditions of French school of painting, approximates and moves away from reality. Through the time, starting with 1930 and ending with last works done in the end of life Rudolf Pinnis kept expressive color expression as constant value strength and influence of which has no remoteness.
Yesterday was very windy and cold day, but I wanted a lot to attend this exhibition. Bright colors and fantastic feelings in the wood in summer or expressive colors in the meadows. It was so nice in autumn time.

When Erik draws a fine line, he makes it look easy. His abilty to capture a likeness in the first few seconds of drawing is where composition takes shape.; and from there, the sky's the limit. His artistic discipline is the human form. He is a master artist in various mediums and is well known for his classic oil portaits. He knows in person - Rudolf Nureyev, Karein Kain, Veronica Tenant, Nadja Post and others.
