Giovanni Francesco Barbieri also known as Guercino. Portrait of a lawyer (Francesco Righetti?)

Portrait of a lawyer, oil on canvas, 83,2x66,7cm, Private collection

This painter came from the City of Cento and acquired Europe-wide fame in the 1620s, briefly residing in Rome during the reign of Pope Gregory XV, becoming his protege. In decades to come, Guercino`s fame only increased as corroborated by his book of commissions (Libro del conti).

The Portrait of a Lawyer has a famous collecting history. After appearing on the American art market in 1987, it ended up in the collection of Edmund P.Pillsbury, Director of the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth Texas. Sir Denis Mahon traced the work`s provenance back to the collection of Empress Josephine`s son Eugene de Beauharnais. This revelation was made, thanks to an entry by F.Muxel in a catalogue printed in Munich, providing information about the Leuchtenberg collection. This subsequent travels of the work took it to Saint Petersburg and before the October revolution to Paris (O.Mahon, in Giovanni Francesco Barbieri 1991, pp. 194-195). Information dating back to 1810 tells us that at that time the painting belonged to the Marchese Francesco Sampieri, who sold the collection of 130 works to Eugene de Beauharnais, Vice-Regent of Italy (before the sale, Guercino`s Portrait of a Lawyer hung on the wall of Francesco Giovanni Sampieri`s apartment).

It is possible that the man depicted in the portrait is lawyer Francesco Righetti (1595-1673), a doctor of  legal sciences, who was well-known in Guercino`s native city of Cento, which was also home to the artist`s studio until 1642 (Salerno 1988, pp. 212-213). The portrait was painted  between 1626 and 1628. The lawyer  depicted in the painting was an energetic, active personality, a member of the Community Commitee (Consiglio della Comunita) and author of publications with a legal content, as emphasised by the legal  tomes on the bookshelves (Helmholz 1992 pp.185-188). A wonderful example of a still life with the interaction of light and shade, as it was described in the 18th century by Giuseppe Maria Crespi.

In Kurzeme - L. Purmale

At the Gallery Daugava
"Purmale and Polis are names  that magnetically attract the term "Photo Realism" in surveys of Latvian art, although both artists have often energetically opposed it. Their connection with the quite peripheral trend in the global art history poses many riddles but nevertheles fascinates. It is possible that several principles crucial for Purmale`s art can be elucidated, projecting general principles of Photo Realism against the field of artist`s individual practice. [...]

I like distance, that steamed-up window in-between, that prevents Liga Purmale`s paintings from spreading smells and sounds. Painting is painting, there is nothing to prick up ears and nose about. The world is made up by what is visible. The painting`s world."

Flower Show. Paintings and graphics (27.05.-24.07.)

The image of the flower, saturated with aesthetic beauty and polysemic symbols, flourished in the still-lifes of the 17th century Dutch Old Masters. They ranged from brilliant floral abuundance to ascetic simplification of forms and left their impression on the creative explorations of successive generations.
"Flower Show" with its romantic moods begins symbolically in spring when nature is in full blossom. One of the main themes is dedicated to the queen of flowers - the rose, whose blossom symbolises love, commemoration, suffering and clarity, and which was known in the gardens of Asia 5000 years ago.

Dace Lapiņa. Painting. 04.03.2011.- 10.04.2011

Still life is the genre in which Dace Lapiņa feels best. She has said that each work artwork is "a small spatial square in which people feel good and in which everyday objects create beauty and harmony". Still life was first defined in as a genre in 17th century France, and it is perfect way of describing Dace Lapiņa's  work, including portraits and figural compositions, as well.

A.Slyusarev "Space-Time" 15 January - 20 February 2011

Alexander Slyusarev. Moscow 2008. Courtesy of the family

Alexander Slyusarev is one of the few truly important independent postwas Soviet photographers. He took up photography in 1958 and was working in his mature style  by the early 1960s. His work displays a kind of  negative aesteticd that rejects the trite humanism of official Soviet art photography as well as  the often-bombastic quality of the images in the Soviet press.
He was self-taught photographer as for a  long time he worked as professional translator from Italian having a diploma of Maurice Thorez Moscow State Pedagogical  Institute Foreign Languages.
From 1974 to 1984 he created a series black and white minimalistic  "squares" taken with a  Rolleiflex camera, which made  the photographer famous among fellow photographers and curators.
His photography is located in the  many famous collections all around the world, including Museum of Modern Art, New York, Odense Museum of Photography, Denmark, Latvian Museum of Photography, Riga.

Paulis Postažs "Exhibition before exhibition" 04.10.2010. - 11.10.2010

I am glad to introduce you with next exhibition by P.Postažs "Exhibition before exhibition".

This is a painting of the light, what reveals us the truth. All Paulis Postaž's paintings process this presence of the light in the literal and figurative tense. Here realities are twisted, and their bounds cannot be separated. He himself transfers those realities, then lets then float together again, dissolve, - enabling the viewer  to breath free in this radiance. From the glisting of the light on a women's brittle shoulder to the tarnish on a sharry's moist side.

After this painting paintings by P.Postažs will be shipped to his exhibition in the gallery d'Haudrency in Belgium.
